Biography
Background
Originally from Kilkenny in Ireland, I qualified in Limerick as an Art Teacher in 1979, specialising in sculpture.
After moving to the UK I set up, taught in and managed a thriving Arts Centre for adults with physical disabilities for 20 years.
Media
I work my original designs in clay as my preferred medium. Making my own moulds, I produce limited editions of my work in resin Bronze, Aluminium, Marble, Slate, Iron, etc. Wood is another medium I enjoy working in - I try to let the natural characteristics of the wood dictate the final outcome.
Exhibitions
A number of my sculptures are held in private collections in the UK, Ireland and Holland. As a member of the Surrey Sculpture Society, I exhibit regularly throughout the South East of England e.g. Polesden Lacey (Great Bookham), Harvey Gallery (Guildford), Riverhouse (Walton), Denbies Vineyard (Dorking), Vivartis (Witley). For an up-to-date list of exhibitions please visit the Surrey Sculpture Society website.
Why I sculpt
Like many of the early artists, I draw inspiration from various sources e.g. observations of life and people, spiritual themes, etc.
I’m intrigued with what makes people tick, i.e. what goes on inside. Some people find it easier to relate to visual stimulus than to words and certain concepts can be communicated more effectively through images where words can fall woefully short.
We all have a need for love, acceptance, security, self-worth and significance. I find sculpture an excellent vehicle for conveying some of humankind’s deepest emotions e.g. Reassured.
Commissions
I am happy to accept commissions for small or large-scale work. For contact information please go to the Contact Details page.
Studio visits
I work from my studio in Surrey and would be happy to show people round and explain the processes involved in creating and casting my work.
